Christmas Party
(more pictures on the
December Show & Tell page)
Forty members and guests enjoyed the antics
of our own Santa (Anita Johnson) who distributed gifts
for a Yankee Swap then tucked away wrapping paper (of all places) inside her vest. |
Santa helped Claudette open a beautiful homemade loon pillow.
"I can help you trade it," said Santa; Claudette decided to keep the
pillow. |
A few members display the lap quilts we will
give as Christmas gifts to residents of Calais Methodist Homes. |
Annual Fall Shop Hop
It was a beautiful fall day when the Shop
Hop led members to Waterville to visit The Yardgoods Center, Madison for a
stop at Fabric Garden and then on to Newport to visit the girls at
Stitches. Members included (front row l to r) Anita Johnson, Sandy
Hill, Shirley Slauenwhite, and Cyril Francis. Back row (l to r)
Lynda Coffey, Teresa Porter, Nancy Lewey, Liz Trouant, Mary Ann O'Brien
and Mary Anne Brown. Bonnie Hunter also participated and took the
photo. |

It wouldn't be a St. Croix Quilters' Shop Hop without
Anita wearing a costume! Here she is at Stitches using
"Groucho" glasses to peruse new quilt books. |
All of the shops we visited rolled out the red carpet
(gifts and discounts) for our group. Happy shoppers, Liz and Sandy,
leaving Fabric Garden. |
Shirley had great fun in the the Quilt-in-a-Day
corner with "Eleanor Burns." |

Events chairman) surrounded by lots of door prizes.
She challenged everyone to make a quilt block from the leopard-print
fabric used as napkins. |
Cyndi Black of Litchfield, Nena Cunningham
of West Gardner, and Wendy Reed of Bath (volunteers with the Maine
Quilt Heritage Committee) visited the St. Croix Valley to hold a
Documentation Day at the Downeast Heritage Museum in Calais. They're
shown here examining an antique butterfly quilt made in the 1930s. A wide selection were
documented including quilts from Norridgewock, Topsfield, Princeton,
Calais, Eastport, Charlotte, Pembroke, Dennysville, among other locations in Maine and St.
Stephen in New Brunswick.
The
Maine Quilt Heritage Committee, part of Pine Tree Quilters Guild, Inc.,
was established in 1986 and, to date, has documented over 2500 quilts.
The data collected will go the the Maine State Museum and eventually be
compiled into a book.

Joanie Jones and Eva Severance were the
"Official Label Stitchers."
|
The smiling faces of Liz Trouant and Sandy
Hill registered the 44 quilts brought in to be documented.
|
Other members who assisted
at Documentation Day were Mary Anne Brown and Bonnie Hunter who
interviewed quilt owners; Edie Marsh and Joline Cook who were the
photographer's assistants, Jean Herrick who worked as a "floating
volunteer," and Leona Juranty, who provided delicious refreshments.

We hosted the Area 5 Spring Meeting in Ellsworth, ME
Dana Bard (right) gave a
wonderful lecture, "Women's Work: Quilting in
American History,"
and showed many quilts from her
antique collection as well as some she made.
It was St. Croix Quilters'
turn to host the spring meeting. A huge thank you to Anita Johnson,
her Special Events Committee, and Guild members who did a spectacular job
making centerpieces, setting tables, providing door prizes, manning the
registration table, and doing all the other little things that needed to
be done. Anita is well known throughout Area 5 for her "zany fun" in
planning these events; over 100 quilters attended.
|
Members from two Area 5 chapters, Island
Quilters and Hancock County Quilters,
"wowed" us
with a huge collection of Mystery Quilts. |
